What to Wear for Your Photo Session

One of the most common questions I get from families before their photo session is, “What should we wear?” And I get it — you want your photos to look amazing and reflect your style, but you also want to feel comfortable and confident.
The good news? Styling doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little guidance, your wardrobe can enhance the whole look and feel of your photos.
Here are my go-to tips for what to wear for your family photo session:
1. Choose a Color Palette — Not Matching Outfits
Coordinating > Matching. Pick 2–3 main colors and sprinkle them throughout everyone’s outfits in different ways. Think soft neutrals like cream, beige, dusty blue, sage green, or blush. Add in a pop of color if it feels like “you” — mustard, burnt orange, deep wine, or denim always photograph beautifully.
💡 Pro tip: Earth tones and muted colors tend to photograph best, especially in natural light.
2. Mix Textures & Layers
Adding variety in textures (like linen, lace, denim, knits) gives your photos depth and interest. Layers like cardigans, vests, or scarves can add movement and a cozy vibe — perfect for fall sessions or breezy beach evenings.
3. Keep Patterns Subtle
Florals, stripes, and plaids can work well if they’re not overpowering. Avoid large logos or graphics, as they can distract from your beautiful faces and connections.
4. Think About Location
Beach: Flowy dresses, bare feet, linen pants, soft blues and creams.
Park or Garden: Earth tones, soft florals, browns, greens, and dusty rose.
Urban/downtown: Denim, black and white, bold accessories, fun textures like leather or velvet.
5. Comfort is Confidence
If you or your little ones are uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, it will show. Make sure outfits fit well, move easily, and feel like you. When you feel great, your joy shines through in every photo.
6. Dress Mom First
Start with Mom’s outfit — a flowy dress or soft jumpsuit often works beautifully — then coordinate everyone else around her look. This helps create a more cohesive overall palette.
7. Don't Forget the Details
Accessories like a wide-brimmed hat, delicate jewelry, or a textured blanket can elevate your look. And shoes matter! Avoid neon sneakers or worn-out sandals — barefoot, boots, or clean neutral shoes are ideal.
